Improve Google Ranking
As I’m talking about the improvement of ranking on search engine results, here I’ll only discuss how you can work with an already ranked post of your blog.
Here are the steps of increasing the search engine ranking of a webpage (blog post) –
Step 1. Check the page’s responsiveness
First of all, make sure that the webpage that you’re gonna rank better on SERPs is responsive. Responsive page means that the page can be fitted with any sized screen.
So visit the page from different devices of different sized screens. If you see that the post isn’t responsive or is having problem loading on different screens, then you must fix the problem as early as possible.
There are tons of WordPress responsive themes available. So you can pick a decent one from thousands of options.
Step 2. Check the page’s speed
Then check your webpage whether it’s speedy enough or not.
Learn: How to check website speed?
You must check the speed of the exact webpage, not the whole website this time. So drop the URL of the post that you wanna improve ranking in the speed checking box.
You should maintain a decent speed of your webpage. The score 85 to 90 in PageSpeedInsights is very good.
If your page isn’t speedy enough, just read the following post –
Step 3. Check current position
After making the webpage speedy enough & well responsive, now check the current ranking of the post. You can check it from Google Search Console or SEMrush. Then you must also check the current position of your post with a real search on search engines. This will show you the real-time result which is the most recent.
Is your post ranking with a single or multiple keywords? If there are multiple keywords, then note down all of them & go to the next step.
Step 4. Analyze the ranked keywords
Now analyze the keywords. The things that you should check with all the noted keywords are as follows –
- Short-tail or long-tail
- Monthly average search volume
The first considerable thing is the competitiveness of your keywords in the post. You must take that keyword as your main target keyword for the post which is with the lowest competition.
Using SEMrush can show you the competitiveness of keywords. Check this –
This snapshot was taken from SEMrush & you should check the ‘KD’ section for keyword difficulty analysis. The lower the number is, the better the chance of ranking for the keyword.
So, pick the keyword that shows the lowest KD score on SEMrush.
You should also check whether the chosen lowest KD keyword is long-tail or not. If it’s a short one, then add a relevant word or two to make it a long-tail keyword.
And you should also check the monthly average search volume. Suppose that your chosen lowest KD and long-tail keyword is searched only 10 times per month, then you couldn’t receive decent traffic even if you can rank your post with the keyword.
So, you must go for a decent searched keyword.
Step 5. Analyze the top competitors’ blog posts
Now is the time to analyze your competitors’ posts.
Search with the main target keyword & go to the first 3 results. Visit those posts & try to analyze what extra or better things that the posts are offering that have ranked them on top of SERPs.
Follow the characteristics of the top ranked posts that are lacking in your post.
Step 6. Take the main target keyword at the beginning
Now try to place the main target keyword at the beginning of your post if it’s not already there. This practice will surely improve the ranking of your post.
If taking the keyword at the beginning of the title looks odd, then you must avoid following this step.
Step 7. Make the title unique
Now check whether the title of your webpage is unique or not. If it’s not unique, then make a unique title using the main keyword.
Changing the title has no negative impact on an indexed post.
Step 8. Don’t change the URL
But you shouldn’t change the URL of your post. So always keep the URL of your post as it is even if you see that the URL doesn’t contain the main target keyword.
Step 9. Maintain some rules of keyword prominence
Keyword prominence is meant by placing the target keyword at certain positions of your post. I’ve already mentioned that you should place the keyword at the beginning of your post.
There are some other 2 to 3 important places where you should try to keep your main keyword or its LSI keyword (s).
Step 10. Follow the proper hierarchy
Hierarchy maintenance is very important to make a thing look balanced. Whenever you write a webpage, it should also have some hierarchical balance.
A well-format webpage can be written with the proper use of header tags. I see that most bloggers fail to maintain good header tag use. I was also unknown about it, but now I’ve learned how to do it in a proper way.
Watch the PowerPoint presentation and learn the proper format of a blog post using header tags –
Step 11. Check internal, outbound, and backlinks
Make sure that your post has some internal and outbound links.
You must add only the relevant posts to the post that you wanna rank well. Also, you should do the interlinking (writing anchor text) of your posts properly.
For outbound linking, you must choose quality blog posts for links. Linking to low-quality posts will harm your post’s ranking.
Then check whether there’s any outbound link there or not for your post. If there’s no backlink of the post, then you should try to get some authority backlinks. But never spam or utilize unethical ways of backlinking.
If you see that your post was linked with many low-quality or broken links, then you can remove the links by disavowing through Google Search Console.
Step 12. Destroy the keyword density
You might be wondering what this point is all about! Where most SEO experts are telling you to maintain a certain keyword density, I’m suggesting you destroy it!
You should write the whole post without looking at a certain level of keyword density. Google along with other search engines has become very smart & if they see that a post has a keyword used too many times in it, then they consider this as black hat technique. They’ll simply overlook your post at the time of ranking.
What you can do is that using some LSI keywords of the main targeted keyword. This will make the post naturally written & bring a lot of variations to it.
Step 13. Remove bold or italic from the keyword
This is another breaking point of the traditional practice of the used of bold & italic. If you make your target keyword bold or italic, then search engines will take it negatively.
So make bold or italic those words that aren’t your target keyword.
Step 14. Add words and make at least 2500-word post
Now check the word count of your blog post. Is it a thin one? If so, then add more words to it. Try to make it at least 2500-word post.
You may think why it’s 2500 words! Well, stats show that the post that has more than 2450 words rank better on SERPs.
So you could be one step ahead of your competitors if you can produce longer posts than them, especially 2500 worded one.
Step 15. Check the Images
At this step, you should be aware of your post’s images. Check whether you’ve chosen some relevant & eye-catching images or not.
Also, make sure that the images are properly optimized and don’t forget to compress them before using on your post. You can use a good plugin like WP Smush for image compression.
Step 16. No bold in header tags
If you make bold some of your header tags, then you could experience bad result in ranking. Making a header tag bold makes the coding look ugly. As search engines read codes, so you should make the codes good looking.
So if you see that some header tags are having bold, then you should remove the bold from them.
Step 17. Keep a good readability score
Watch the video and learn how to keep a good Flesch reading ease score –
Step 18. Check tags and category
This part is very important because like your webpage’s ranking, categories also rank on SERPs. So you must inject your post into a relevant category of your blog.
Also, use relevant tags to your post that will be helpful in exploring it.
Step 19. Use Multimedia
I wanna tell this to you with an example. Suppose that you’ve visited two hotels, one has more facilities than the other. If the situation is this, then which hotel you’ll like?
The one that has more facilities or the other one that has fewer facilities?
It’s common to say that you’ll prefer the hotel that offers more facilities than the other! Similarly, if your post contains relevant extra things, then search engines, as well as readers, will give it more value than its competitors.
So you should use light weight multimedia like video and PowerPoint presentation embedding, attaching image & audio etc.
I again say whatever multimedia you use, keep your webpage lightweight. Otherwise, you may experience slow speed with your post which will surely affect the ranking negatively.
Step 20. Use call to action in the meta description
Many bloggers don’t pay heed to write meta description since they heard that it has no SEO benefit. But you should still write a meta description of your post that must have a strong call to action for reading it.
Why? The answer is simple as you can increase CTR (Click Through Rate) just by using a call to action copy in your meta description of your post. Increasing the CTR tells search engines that your blog post is worthy of reading than other posts that are also ranked with it.
The Meta description is shown under the title of a post on SERPs. Many readers visit a post if they find the meta description interesting & valuable to them.
So write a good meta description of your post.
Step 21. Share your webpage by many times
Sharing your posts many times on different time lines of different people will improve the search results of your post.
You can consider Copyblogger for this case. Look at this post‘s sharing stats –
You see that this short post has been shared whopping 829 times on different social media platforms. This type of the great number of social sharing drives huge organic as well as social traffic to Copyblogger. Organic traffic is gained by improving the rank of blog posts.
Step 22. Get in-depth comments
If you check the top ranked posts on SERPs, you’ll see that most of the posts are with tons of comments. Look at the snapshot taken from Backlinko –
This post was ranked with “Get backlink” & has whopping 863 comments till now.
Getting more comments to a post means more engagement. Search engines will surely value to those pages that are engaging more people.
I’ve noticed that one of my posts improved its ranking on SERPs from 36 to 18 within a day when that post received 2 quality comments.
So, use “call to action” at the bottom of your post to comment on it. The more comments you’ll get, the more engagement you could build. This will send a positive signal about your post to search engines which will improve the rank of it.
You can take help of some comment reciprocating groups available on Facebook. These groups can help you get more comments on your blog.
Step 23. Reduce bounce rate
Hit the play button & learn the importance of reducing bounce rate –
Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.
Step 24. Increase session time
The average time that’s spent by your readers is also important for increasing the rank of your post on SERPs. So you should work on it. If visitors land on your post and then leave like fleeing, then it’s easy to understand that your post isn’t worthy enough for ranking at that position.
Your post will soon lose even its current position if you can’t increase the timing session of it.
You can do a trick that might be helpful for you. Find out some friends who’re living in different locations. Request them to search your post and read it for a long time. This will give search engines a good notion about your post.
Step 25. Search the page by many people
This is part of increasing CTR of your post. If people search for your target keyword & give more priority to visit your post, then it’ll increase the CTR of it. This will improve the ranking of your post soon.
You can also request your friends or family members to search and visit your page naturally. Suppose that your post’s current rank is at 30 on SERPs and if your friends or you just search the target keyword and directly visit your post, it’ll reveal that you’re practicing it wrongfully.
Step 26. Wait and let the wave catch it
Finally, you’ll have to wait. Doing everything properly is the first thing & then waiting is the final stage of ranking your post. In fact, it’s for any sort of success.
Sometimes the age of your webpage will help it rank on top of search engines. So it’s never a good idea to expect things done overnight. Some black hat SEO techniques may give you result within a very short time, but that result won’t last for long.
So, do things ethically and succeed.
Yoast SEO is a must-have plugin for a WordPress site, but it can also harm you if you blindly follow it (read: 3 ways Yoast SEO is making you fool!). You should keep the ‘Readability’ button green (), but for ‘Keyword’ button, you should strictly follow my given steps even if you see the button shows orange or red color.
